Biographical/Historical note

This collection covers the lives of Judge Garnett Andrews (1778-1873), his son Col. Garnett Andrews (1837-1903), and his son Garnett Andrews, Sr. (1870-1946). There are also documents detailing Andrews family genealogy, as well as other allied families such as Ball, Beirne, Bowen and Lenoir. Of particular interest is the journal of Eliza Frances Andrews (1840-1939), daughter of Judge Andrews.

Scope and Contents note

The Andrews Family Papers include documents of several generations of this Southern family, who lived in Georgia and Chattanooga, TN. This collection covers the lives of Judge Garnett Andrews (1798-1873), his son Col. Garnett Andrews (1837-1903), and his son Garnett Andrews, Sr. (1870-1946). There are also documents detailing Andrews family genealogy, as well as other allied families such as Ball, Beirne, Bowen and Lenoir. There are photographs of family members, correspondence, documents, publications and manuscripts. Of particular interest is the journal of Eliza Frances Andrews (1840-1939), daughter of Judge Andrews. Eliza Andrews wrote several books, articles and essays (under her own name and using pseudonyms Fanny Andrews and Elzey Hay), including the popular War Time Journal of a Georgia Girl, 1864-1865 (D. Appleton & Co., 1908), A Family Secret (as Elzy Hay) (Lippincott, 1876) and several botany text books. Her journal, which covers 1870-1872, was published by the University of Tennessee Press in 2002, with the title Journal of a Georgia Woman, 1870-1872, edited by UTC Professor Kittrell Rushing.
