The Clift Family Papers collection includes documents relating to the family of Moses H. Clift (1836-1911). Within the collection are Clift and Fain families genealogical documents; photos, correspondence, clippings, and speeches relating to the Civil War, General A.P. Stuart, and Confederate Veterans' affairs. There are also Civil War artifacts, such as flags and banners.

Biographical/Historical note

Moses H. Clift (1836-1911) was a Confederate major during the Civil War. He served under Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry Corps and later served under General George G. Dibrell. He spent the years after the war as a prominent Chattanoooga attorney and as a brigadier general in the United Confederate Veterans. Clift was the grandfather of actor Montgomery Clift.

Scope and Contents note

The Clift Family Papers collection provides an interesting insight into the affairs of a Confederate Civil War Veteran, Moses H. Clift (1836-1911). The collection includes documents and correspondence from the war, as well as medals, banners, and certificates highlighting Clift's involvement in the United Confederate Veterans organization. Also included are documents outlining other family members' involvement with Civil War organizations, such as the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Provenance

The donor is listed as Mrs. Dudley Porter, Jr. However, the control folder includes information which indicates that Mrs. Porter received the collection from a Mrs. Bishop, and that before then the materials were primarily in the posession of the General A.P. Stewart Chapter of the UDC when Mrs. M.H. Clift was chairman. The control folder also includes notes of thanks to a Ms. Lilliam Summers, but Mrs. Porter is the only person listed on all documents.
