The majority of this collection involves Kay Baker Gaston's research of Chattanooga writer and artist Emma Bell Miles (1879-1919). Included is correspondence with Miles’ daughter, Jean Miles Catino (1903-2000), documents concerning Chattanooga writers Grace McGowan Cooke and Alice McGowan, and drafts of her biography of Emma Bell Miles.

Biographical/Historical note

Ms. Kay Baker Gaston is a Tennessee historian and writer who lives in Springfield, Tennessee. She is currently the only biographer of Appalachian writer and author Emma Bell Miles.

Scope and Contents note

This collection is comprised of four linear feet of research material on Emma Bell Miles (1879-1919), noted author, artist, and naturalist of the Appalachian region. Also included is correspondence with Miles’ daughter, Jean Miles Catino (1903-2000), documents concerning Chattanooga writers Grace McGowan Cooke and Alice McGowan, and drafts of Gaston's biography of Emma Bell Miles.
