Biographical / Historical

Joseph Johnston was born in Blount, Tennessee in 1809. After his marriage to Caroline M. Hair (or Haire), he settled in Madisonville, Tennessee. It was there that he established a store and became a successful merchant. He died in 1874 and is buried in Madisonville Cemetery.

The Joseph Johnston correspondence and records collection was deposited with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on an unknown date by an unknown source, although it is rumored that the collection was donated by James Livingood, a faculty member at the University of Chattanooga.
